In the not-too-distant future, war has ravaged the planet at the price of countless lives. Equilibrium is the perfect example why I do not rate lower for derivativeness or unoriginality. Where there should be fuller, more lively action elements, there's nothing. S'ils sont pris à jeun, c'est la peine de mort assurée. Equilibrium's Blu-ray release actually contains one extra, a featurette entitled Finding 'Equlibrium' 480p, 4:26. The front-heavy feel does a disservice to the film's many action scenes, where it sounds like half the soundstage has simply been chopped off.
When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it. That's not to the film's detriment; while allegory is often used to strong, tone-establishing, purpose-revealing commentary, Equilibrium's matter-of-fact tone resonates just as strongly and achieves the same kind of success even if the point isn't made in a more shadowy, undercover sense that's defined many of the great cautionary tales of yore. Synopsis In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Another issue with the film is when characters, like Diggs' Brandt, are supposed to be monotone, but regularly act outside of this emotionless edict. Whether you love action or a great plot line, this movie gives the Matrix trilogy especially Reloaded and Revolutions a run for its money--to say the least. I know it makes no sense for a culture with no emotions to still be able to fall in love, choose a spouse and desire sex to create children. Moral of the story is: watch it, you won't be disappointed.
I know half the people that Preston attacks are just standing there doing nothing while they wait to get their ass kicked. In this world, a law enforcement group known as the Grammaton Clerics enforce the law, seeking out those who disobey the law, destroying any artifact that could stir emotion, from music to literature, or even animals. The motives for her disappearance are unknown; was she targeted? It's a much classier way to handle a multi-pack. Stark whites and deep blacks, with very few grays to be found, to be precise. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Funnily enough, an early sequence with cars on screen has no movement, yet later scenes, the ones with the best use of this effect, feature the sound of moving cars that we never see. In a dystopian future, a totalitarian regime maintains peace by subduing the populace with a drug, and displays of emotion are punishable by death. The film runs a dangerous line, with the Prozium turning its recipients into drones who almost march in tune, expressionless, voiceless beings of existence for the sake thereof. In 2006, Wimmer would attempt to create another vision of the future, in a sense, with a bit of box-office poison in He hasn't directed a film since, and while 'Ultraviolet' borrows freely from 'Equilibrium,' it hasn't quite hurt the quality of the first film, despite making the gun kata technique a bit less unique.
While the film is beyond beautiful and it is one of my favorite looking films, by a long shot , there's a soulless feel to it, as eyes never quite look in the right direction, venturing into that dangerous uncanny valley. The government routinely raids known strongholds of resistance where emotions remain; the drugs unused; and art, poetry, and music are present and provide emotional stimuli. Certainly the powers-that-be would not themselves eschew the lifestyle they force upon their subjects. If you're someone who cherishes originality for its own sake, you might not like Equilibrium as much, but you have much more serious epistemological problems to sort out. It's not just a stylistic device here, but represents a particular kind of reality. The cast does an excellent job of portraying characters who are supposed to be mostly emotionless but with cracks in the stoic armor continually poking through. Some viewers might see it as a flaw that characters frequently show what they consider to be signs of emotions in their comments or behavior, but that's part of Wimmer's agenda. The problems with this film add up far too fast. Because it's difficult to even say just what counts as an emotion, and emotions are so wrapped-up with being sentient beings, it would be difficult if not impossible to fully eliminate them, and it's certainly not recommendable. I want to love this film, since I absolutely admire its astonishing visual presence and flair, but despite the lengthy production process, a better quality film would be required for me to not just consider this a case of wasted potential.
Take, for example, the possibility of making owning 'Epic Movie,' 'From Justin to Kelly,' or 'Gigli' a criminal offense… 'Renaissance' - Proof that even a visually arresting film can bore one to sleep, 'Renaissance' aka 'Renaissance: Paris 2054' would probably be condemned as a film no one would ever see, let alone bring to foreign audiences, if it weren't for its unique appearance. Sadly, the only Japanese version to even be listed on Ebay in the last 2 weeks went for almost one hundred bucks, a far cry from the asking price of any other edition. Unfortunately, Equilibrium hasn't received the sonic treatment the film not only deserves, but demands. The apps are synchronized with your account at Blu-ray. All the guys prefer one of the girls; the blonde. Throw in an ending that, much like defeats the purpose of everything we've just seen, and it's hard to root for this film.

First, I rarely will watch a movie twice unless enough time has passed that I have forgotten how it ends. No matter its relative merits as an Action film or the negatives of a few question marks; the pulse of Equilibrium beats most strongly in the story. Is life truly worth living - - and may it even be called living -- if man forcibly devolves into mindless, drug-controlled robots who serve no purpose either in their own lives or for the greater good of society? Not only is art, music, poetry, and even fancy mirror borders outlawed, but man is controlled through the injection of a suppressive drug meant to ensure submission to the new way of life. The transition from genre to genre is incredibly smooth. In numerous scenes, it should have been a bit. Wer dagegen verstößt, wird von sogenannten Klerikern mitleidlos eliminiert. At the end of the film I could not sit still in my seat. Mankind cannot survive a fourth World War. Equilibrium rings true, or rings with a potential to be true, with every viewing.
I just said the word classy in a review for an Echo Bridge product. In addition to a terrifying plot set in our very own future, the movie has mind-blowing action sequences that are choreographed beautifully but not obviously and shot brilliantly and spectacular acting on the part of Christian Bale. If you are a fan of such books as Brave New World, 1984, The Giver, or This Perfect Day or movies like the Matrix and Logan's Run--Equilibrium is just the movie for you. I hate predictable movies and this one is anything but. The dialogue is stilted, either lost in translation and missing that nuanced polish, coming across as a cliff's notes recap of a conversation. This track does squeeze out a decent low end, but clarity is a real problem area in most every area save dialogue. Detail levels are never strong, due to the combination of a few factors.
